Director’s note

“Soda” is the story of my grandfather, Shalom, and my mother (his daughter) in her youth, who lived in the 1950’s in a neighborhood of Holocaust survivors.

The neighborhood was full of men and women still dominated by the fear and terrible memories, haunted by illnesses and nightmares. My grandfather, Shalom, a resistance fighter in the forests of Poland and later the leader of the neighborhood had emotional scars he refused to talk about. My grandfather was a man of principle and justice, but he was never willing to talk about the things he was forced to go through or do in the forest, in the name of principles or justice.

“Soda” will recreate the days of my mother’s youth in the shadow of her father, and the tough jungle law he brought with him from the forest gangs, highlighting the dilemma that suddenly rocked his world and shook his conviction: the dilemma of justice in seeking revenge upon someone who was a “Capo”
“Soda” will depict Israel in the 1950’s, a country of modesty and simplicity, of small homes with featureless yards, surrounded by huge sand dunes and never-ending fields. This is a neighborhood with a small shopping center, a desolated beach, and one factory providing a living for all the families.
